DATU GARA SHRINE
In my hometown, Carigara Leyte, there is a sculpture that is called as the Datu Gara Shrine. Datu Gara was known to be the leader of this town and the name of the town was named after him. It was first named as Kangara, then changed to Carigara, which is obviously still used at this present time .
I have seen this sculpture personally and I love how detailed it was from the features of his face to the style of his clothing and up to the weapon that he had used in the battle which is called ‘sundang’ in our waray-waray dialect.
Sundang’ is a weapon that is still being used and being manufactured in my hometown. It has sharp blade and It is used in various ways such as in farming, in cutting the ‘buko’ into half or basically anything, and sometimes for defense. I believe that Datu Gara had a great influence in this because he had owned a ‘sundang’ as his weapon.
These two things are the pride of Carigara in my opinion because there is no ‘Carigara’ when Datu Gara did not come & lead the town. There is also no influence of ‘sundang’ in this town without him.
